Change - Natural, Disaster, Man-made --- Wandel - natürlich, Unwetter, von Menschenhand --- KYRILL 2007 - 2020

Change --- Wandel --- KYRILL 2007 - 2020

Western-Bödefeld 2007 und 2020 - Click to enlarge

This is a single picture documenting the change that happened between 2007 and 2020 as documented from the almost identical observation point.

The place is the small village of Western-Bödefeld in Northern Germany.

The dominant change is the hurricane induced damage by KYRILL in 2006 which deforested entire hilltops in Germany. It is interesting to note how slow the trees re-grow in size, the new forest is plainly visible.

Of course, man-made changes like reforestation but also house-building and renovation can be observed.

Technological change is also visible, the 2007 picture was taken by a 7 Mpx Sony DSC-P150, the 2020 by a Sony A6600 with 24 Mpx and 1655 lens attached. In comparison, the amount of detail available with this camera is amazing! Unfortunately, blogger downresolutions the picture. For Pixel-Peepers interested in the real detail, download by right-click and view directly on your PC.

Winter time, PP time / Winterzeit, Zeit zum PP

It is winter, -11°C outside, high fog diffuses the light. Not really conditions to to outside and shooting pictures. Instead, the alternatives are to do your tax forms, clean the house or sift through your photo archives and try out your improved SW and PP skills on older favorites. You can imagine what I have chosen :-)

Again and again, I am surprised how much is possible to be gotten out of RAW files even from my lowly, outdated, small-sensor Olympus XZ1. Same thing with the 5N. Except for absolute pixel peeping, the difference in potential between JPG and RAW always outshines by far the differences between cameras.

---
Du kannst dir vorstellen was ich gewählt habe :-)

Good enuff... / Gut genug

Rebecca Madelein Katz
Last Sunday we were invited to an event of the local Jazz club, taking place in Neu-Ulm's Wiley Club. Now I connect with Jazz mostly Freestyle Jazz tormenting you in an unluckily chosen radio station, therefore I was a bit sceptical what to expect. In the end, it was Swing Jazz delivered by Al Cat & the Roaring Tigers, a group of eight mostly gray-haired, experienced musicians who delivered, together with his daughter Rebecca Madeleine Katz, an trained opera singer, almost two hours of widespread entertaining repertoire. The fun certainly showed they had doing this and I myself was pleasantly surprised. Classics like Sentimental Journey appeal to just about anyone.

It is refreshing to say in todays age of technically perfectly delivered music anytime anywhere, and extremely expensive musical performances, that there still exists live music professionally delivered near home, too.

Photographically, on an impulse I took with me my old Nex 5N together with an assortment of manual focussed legacy lenses of the Canon FD era: 28, 35, 135mm at f2.8 and the 50/f1.4.
After making sure that taking pictures was allowed, I remembered to manually white-balance and also to to underexpose by at least a stop to avoid blowing out the faces in the beamlights.

At home when going through the harvest, I was pleasantly surprised that both the old camera and the legacy lenses delivered quite sharp results even white open and manually focussed at minimal shutter speeds.

Summer in Tyrol / Sommer in Tyrol

Quite spontaneously we decided to make a short trip to Southern Tyrol to relax before starting with a new job. This region is sometimes seen as a place where only elder people take their vacation. However, while there are a lot of those basking in the sun and pleasant weather, also quite many more active younger people go biking, trailing or simply relax.
Although this region is formally part of Italy, it seems to be even more of German culture than nearby Austria. Everything, even small details, is well maintained and clean. Everything works, from hiking trails to roads to houses....
Quite a difference to anyone who has been in the Lugano region or more southern. The people themselves are roughly split between German/Austrian and Italian heritage. Former activities resulted in the region getting the status of Autonome Region with some limited independence.
The horse race Haflinger also originated from here. Initially, those horses were square-backed, short legged, sturdy and calm creatures well suited to carry corn from the mountain farmers down steep, narrow foot paths into the valley cities such as Meran. In the last century, breeding switched to enthusiasts and horse riders who preferred those beautiful reliable beasts over nervous arabs.
The breeders keep only a small number of horses on site. The rest, about 60 of them, are left free to roam the open Alms in the mountains, at least over spring to fall.
Anyway, it was a pleasant stay and I stuck to photographing with only two lenses: the 18105 and the 1018.
