When looking at this picture, one might wonder whether it was taken in such scenic places like Havanna, Barcelona or Rome.

Manchmal muss man nicht um die halbe Welt reisen um eine schöne Gegend erleben zu können.
Wenn man dieses Bild anschaut, könnte man sich fragen ob es an einem malerischen Ort wie Havanna, Barcelona oder Rom aufgenommen wurde.

Well, it wasn't. This is Lugano in southern Switzerland. OK, at least for Europeans, this is located nearby :-). But my point is, similar attractions are located nearby, go out and find them!

Nun, nein. Das ist Lugano in der südlichen Schweiz. Gut, zumindest für Europäer liegt das vor der Haustür :-). Aber mein Punkt ist dass Ähnliches in der Nähe zu finden ist, geh raus und entdecke es!

A stupid idea? / Eine dumme Idee?

Well, talking about the power of discouragement, it really lets you lose your steam when it catches you unprepared! I recently had the idea to make a photobook about car lights. After I was finished, I got such a feedback from someone and now have to think whether to continue with this project. But see for yourself, you're free to comment!

Nun, die Macht des Entmutigens ist nicht zu unterschätzen! Wenn sie dich unerwartet erwischt, kann sie einem ziemlich die Luft herauslassen. Ich hatte vor kurzem die Idee, einen Fotoband über Fahrzeugbeleuchtungen zu machen. Nachdem ich fertig war, habe ich ein entsprechendes Feedback von jemand erhalten und muss nun erstmal nachdenken ob ich das weiterverfolgen werde. Aber schaut selbst, Kommentare sind willkommen!

Sony and the customer / Sony und König Kunde

I just noticed that the second firmware update for the Sony Nex 5N is available and immediately put it on my 5N. This update is simply great! Sony once again provided a firmware update for a discontinued camera yielding not only performance improvements (faster AF, much better WB indoors, ..) but also new features like the now useful bracketing range for HDR raw shots.

This may sound like fanboyism, but I think that this shows a sort of customer-business relation where the company seems to be interested in establishing a longer relationshsip with the customer than just selling their product to you.

Ich habe eben durch Zufall bemerkt, dass es für die Sony Nex 5N das zweite Firmware-Update 1.02 gibt. Das wurde natürlich sofort installiert. Ich bin beeindruckt! Sony hat wie schon bei den Nex 3 und 5 ein solches Update für eine nicht mehr hergestellte Kamera bereitgestellt. Und dieses enthält nicht nur zahlreiche Verbesserungen (schnellerer AF, viel besserer Weissabgleich, Erwärmung, ..) sondern auch neue Features wie den nun sinnvoll nutzbaren Bracketing-Bereich von bis zu 3 EVs, z.B. für HDR raw.

Für manche mag sich das wie Fan-Gerede anhören. Aber ich finde, dass dies eine Art Kundenbeziehung zeigt, in welcher die Firma daran interessiert scheint, eine längerfristig andauernde Beziehung zum Kunden aufzubauen als nur ihr Produkt zu verkaufen.

Anyone who has been inside this building knows that it is not only the highest church tower of the world, but also that is is extremely spacious inside. When I took this photo in front, I was impressed how majestic it is and how the all those lines radiate to the sky and further. Somehow, it also reminded me of the opening scene in the Star Wars series and many other science fiction movies. Hence the motivation to postprocess.

Jeder der einmal in diesem Gebäude war, weiss dass es nicht nur den höchsten Kirchtum der Welt besitzt, sondern dass es auch extrem geräumig innen ist. Als ich dieses Bild an der Vorderseite machte, war ich beeindruckt wie majestätisch es wirkt und wie all diese Linien in den Himmel und noch weiter strahlen. Irgendwie hat es mich auch daran erinnert, wie die Star Wars Filme und viele andere Science Fiction Filme beginnen. Deshalb die veränderte Version.

Auto HDR in Nex 5N

Auto HDR in Nex 5N is quite useful, though it is sometimes difficult to really assess when enough is enough.
I took several shots changing Auto HDR strength and exposure compensation and was finally happy with this one.

Die Auto HDR-Funktion der Nex 5N ist ziemlich nützlich, auch wenn es manchmal schwierig ist, wann es genug ist. I habe mehrere Versuche mit verschiedener Stärke und Belichtungskompensation gemacht bevor ich letztendlich hiermit zufrieden war.

Supermoon / Supermond

Tonight the moon is supposed to be in an optimal position for photography. It will not only be full, but also at its closest position to earth, called perigee, a mere distance of about 357.000 km. This makes the moon about 16% brighter than usual.

However, the weather forecast for the weekend is cloudy with rain and a look outside of my window confirms this. Therefore I used the almost clear night yesterday to attempt another go at the moon. Legacy Canon FD zoom lens with the original Canon FD teleconverter allows a focal length of 400 mm, effectively 600 mm taking crop into account. I actually bought the teleconverter just for this kind of shots.

I was surprised how fast the moon moves as I had to reposition the camera for almost every shot. This is an indication of not using too long shutter speeds. The night sky had humidity, there was a halo visible with the eye, but not with the camera. So I guess in winter a better shot should be possible.

When the moon is so clear, one can understand the longing to explore that surface and set man's foot upon it.

Heute abend ist der (Voll-)Mond in seiner Erd-nähsten Position, nur noch 357.000 km trennen uns :-). Ein Phänomen, das auch als Supermond bzw. Perigee bekannt ist. Dadurch wird der Mond um ca. 16% heller als sonst.

Leider war die Wettervorhersage für das Wochenende regnerisch bzw. bewölkt. Ein Blick aus dem Fenster bestätigt das zu 100%. Deshalb habe ich gestern Nacht den noch klaren Himmel genutzt um mal wieder einen Griff nach den Sternen zu machen. Mit meinem Altglas in Form eines Canon FD 80-200/4 Zooms und dem passenen Telekonverter 2xB kommt man auf effektiv 600 mm Brennweite.

Die Blende war auf f8, also f16, Nex 5N. Ich war überrascht wie schnell der Mond wandert, da ich fast bei jedem Foto die Kamera neu positionieren musste.

Wenn der Mond so klar am Himmel steht und die Oberfläche fast zum Greifen nah scheint, kann man die Sehnsucht des Menschen verstehen, den Fuß auf diese Oberfläche zu setzen und es zu erforschen.
